Threadwing Couriers
Threadwing couriers are flying and gliding animals with ribbonlike sensory vanes instead of feathers. They carry pollen analogues, wound scents, gut symbionts, route memory, and social injuries between groves, wetlands, reefs, and breeding grounds.
They are pollinators, scouts, messengers, and occasional accusations with wings. Calling them birds is useful until it becomes stupid.
Body and Senses
Each vane is a sensory ribbon that reads pressure, chemical gradient, static charge, thermal plume, and memory residues. The vanes fray naturally and regrow, leaving shed fibers in nests and courier stations. Those fibers can be read by Lattice Ants or braided into short-lived warning knots by Sa’auei’a travelers.
Threadwings have individual preferences, pair bonds, rivalries, and grudges. They also carry colony-scale obligations through their gut symbionts and nesting routes. A threadwing may want berries. Its microbiome may want a treaty enforced. Both count.
Ecological Contracts
Threadwings pollinate Umbros-Facing Lantern Trees, warn Prismwake Mats of destructive grazers, carry reef mineral tastes inland, and report sickness from Candle Fungal Roads.
They are paid in nectar, warm roosts, salt, preened parasites, and reliable route light. They punish bad partners by withholding pollination, scrambling message order, or delivering a grievance to someone with teeth.
Behavioral Model
Primary drives: feed, mate, maintain route reputation, protect nests, and keep symbiont cargo viable.
Memory channels: gut symbionts, vane residues, route songs, nesting fibers, lantern pulses, and remembered insults.
Cooperation triggers: clean roosts, timely nectar, respectful nest distance, parasite removal, and accurate route signals.
Defection triggers: stolen eggs, poisoned nectar, false lantern pulses, forced capture, or attempts to edit gut memory without negotiation.
Threat response: flock silence, false routes, alarm veils, grievance delivery, parasite dumping, and coordinated mobbing of exposed tissue.
NPC Handles
A threadwing NPC should act like a courier who owns both the message and the road enough to have opinions. It is distractible in small ways and politically precise in large ones.
Useful state variables: hunger, route trust, nest risk, cargo integrity, mate bond, and grudge intensity.
Readable actions: vane flutter, route circling, refusal to land, fiber shedding, targeted dropping, nest-call mimicry, or landing only on one faction’s marker.
