Lattice Ants
Lattice ants are colony insects that build temporary bridges, diagnostic trails, and living circuits from their bodies, shed fibers, and cultivated microbial glue. They recycle scraps and corpses, but their more dangerous service is history reading.
Their trails are not scent paths alone. They are short-term memory circuits that ask the ground what recently crossed it, what leaked, what lied, and what paid.
Body and Senses
Individual lattice ants are small, jointed, and almost disposable at the colony scale. Their bodies lock together into spans, loops, and netted sheets. Shed fibers hold chemical traces. Microbial glue stores brief impressions of pressure, heat, immune residue, and mineral disturbance.
A colony’s intelligence is strongest while a lattice is physically assembled. Break the bridge and the mind changes shape. This makes them quick, local, and politically cheap until they are suddenly not cheap at all.
Ecological Contracts
Lattice ants clean wounds, diagnose trails, read abandoned nests, and report route contamination to Candle Fungal Roads. Lantern Trees use them as ground auditors. Threadwings shed fibers that ants can interpret as route testimony.
Payment is usually sugar, corpse access, shelter cavities, or permission to harvest shed tissue. The dangerous part is that ants may sell the same history twice if no contract forbids it.

NPC Handles
A lattice ant NPC should feel like a forensic contractor with mandibles and no sacred loyalty beyond contract law. It is useful because it is local. It is dangerous because local truth travels.
Useful state variables: brood hunger, payment ledger, glue health, recent trail density, neutrality pressure, and buyer conflict.
Readable actions: assembling bridges, refusing a sample, carrying sugar away without reporting, forming accusation glyphs, biting exposed wounds, or redirecting traffic toward another witness.
